NBIRT Unveils Solar-Powered Cold Storage Facility to Empower Local Farmers
Game-changing initiative aims to reduce post-harvest losses and boost economic growth for farmers in West Tripura
On 8th December 2024, the NB Institute for Rural Technology (NBIRT) marked a significant milestone in agricultural development by inaugurating a 5-Metric-Ton Capacity Solar-Powered Cold Storage Facility at SUNIL OFFICE, a branch office of NBIRT located in Arkaneer, Uttam Bhakta Chowmuhani, West Tripura.
Developed at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh, the facility was supported financially by the Department of Science and Technology (SEED Division), Government of India, and in collaboration with Geetanjali Solar Enterprise, Kolkata. Designed to store vegetables and perishable goods even during overcast conditions by utilizing solar energy, this facility promises to reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers' income by ensuring efficient and affordable storage solutions.
A New Dawn for Farmers in West Tripura
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of distinguished guests and local stakeholders, including:

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) S.P. Gonchoudhuri, an eminent scientist and Honourable President of NBIRT, who highlighted the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and their role in enhancing farmers' income.
Dr. Gonchoudhuri emphasized that this innovative solar-powered cold storage would be an economic game-changer for local farmers, allowing them to store their produce without worrying about spoilage or market constraints.
Local Farmers Hail the Initiative
The facility has been warmly welcomed by local farmers, particularly members of the "KRISHAK BANDHU" Self-Help Group (SHG), who struggle with access to reliable storage options. Calling it a "true game-changer," the farmers believe this innovation will provide better market opportunities and significantly reduce economic hardships caused by post-harvest losses.

The inauguration ceremony brought together a large gathering of local farmers, dignitaries, media representatives, and community members, all of whom participated in celebrating this transformative initiative.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Er. Kapil Baran Bhowmik, Vice President of NBIRT, and Mr. Abhijit Gonchoudhuri, Secretary of NBIRT, along with technical insights from Mr. P.L. Ghosh, Technical Advisor at NBIRT.
